[03 Jan 2010|08:26pm]
A little while ago, I noticed that I hadn't posted in this journal for over six months. You probably know how one means to sit down and catch up, getting everything out of the way in order to maybe record things a bit more frequently in the future. IN this case, I supposed I've been a bit stymied by little of note actually happening. It feels like half of a year should have included more notable events.

Anyway, there are only two things for me to report. One is from the past and the other is from the opposite of the past.

I'm a vegetarian now. This isn't a terribly important thing, but it may as well be on the record in case anyone who reads this is going to take me to dinner or something. It's going pretty well so far.

The other bit is that I finally have an apartment lined up after what will be a year of saving and searching by the time I'm there. It's relatively inexpensive and roomy, so I'm looking forward to it.

(man, that was it? Work really does take up a lot of time.)

Now is the time to quickly update from work.

Stuff that happened since last time:

* We got rabbits. I took pictures and intended to post them, but my dialup connection got in the way and then they grew double the size. I'll try to get accurate pictures soon.

* The band has started recording. I finished off my bass parts (for now) on Thursday, so it shouldn't be too long until our first three songs are done. We have to take the whole thing in steps due to cost and time, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Slightly ironically, this means that I may have my first "union job".

* I'm ensconced at Stream for now. Working for Rogers is pretty much as you'd expect. It was fun to go from having no knowledge of cell phones to knowing bloody everything about a given provider's services and to still have no idea how to turn most of them on. Feel free to ask whatever you like, though I doubt I can help you save all that much.

* I still haven't moved out. Caution and the sudden cost of recording got in the way. I guess a couple of months' delay isn't so much in the long run, and things have been looking up in that regard. A slightly higher-paying job would be just the thing to make it to the home stretch.

* I'm at the farm now. Ask if you don't know the number.
* Barring unforeseen circumstances, I'll have a job at Stream starting next week. It's within heaving distance of the Fanshawe campus, so let me know if you routinely get stuck there and want company.
* Band is frustratingly stalled. Today marks a solid week of near-misses and the like. This will hopefully reverse soon.
* Is anyone aware of lodgings for one around the $600 mark that will become available around the start of May?

(* I think I basically only post at personal milestones anymore. I am basically neutral about this. It might be nice to talk about things a bit more often, but I'm very much out of the habit. This is all to say that if you actually want to hear more about anything I would have written if I were more prolific, feel free to ask.)

Having gotten a ride from practice, we were just outside my house when we saw no less than three deer making their way across the street.

For those who don't know, I live in the city now.

I can only imagine that they made it all the way from Springbank to here, though the logic of that route is baffling. I wonder where they were going.

I just found out that Rudy Ray Moore died. He was older than I thought he was. If his name is unfamiliar to you (but surely you know of Dolemite?), have a listen to this. (warning: the sort of poetry you shouldn't listen to at work/family dinner unless your job/family is really cool)

Cor whatsit, it's been a while. I've been waiting for some news before posting, but it's still up in the air and here I am regardless.

That news pertains to me trying out for a bassist position in a local band. I met the guys and we seemed to get along, but they didn't call me back to actually hear me play like they said they would as of yet. I'll send another email and see if anything comes of it.

Anyway, the reason I'm writing is that I just finished a game that I can't get out of my head. You've probably heard of it, at least in passing, if you read about games on the internet at all. It's called Braid, and it's been making the rounds of everyone with access to a 360 and a blog since it was released a couple of weeks ago.

Rich, whose place is where I'm typing this, graciously let me use his accumulated points to buy it, and I've been cracking away at it for a couple of weeks. I just finished the main bit (there are optional things afterward, but this ends the story as far as I can tell) and it's just not leaving my head.

This is just maybe a little on the long side. There are spoilers, but I've tried to mark them.Collapse )

I'm finally finished school for a year or so. I'm not really sure how to react to this now that the long-awaited time is finally here. For a few days, I still felt like I was a student with a project of some kind looming over me. I'm starting to unwind, though, and I'm hoping to have some fun before I settle down to serious work.

With that in mind, anyone who wants to recommend an idea for a vacation is welcome to do so here. My budget is low, but I can manage a poor version of anything you might suggest, most likely. I'm hoping to spend about a month away, preferably out of the country and in a fairly different place.

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.

Snatches of lyrics and a bit of commentary seem to be germane additions to the idea, as those were in chibifrieza's version, so I'm going with that. I'm not tagging anybody, though. I'm mainly doing this one because the commentary angle can lead to interesting bits of information.

I tried to buy another year of LJ time with PayPal, but it wouldn't allow it. Either I don't have enough in there or it doesn't want to take the money that is in there. I'm investigating. Either way, that breaks the several-year streak.

I got this from uninformed.
I will send something handmade (or a small, thoughtful storebought something) to the first 5 people who leave a comment here (and who are willing to participate in this meme) on this post. I don't yet know what that gift will be, but you will receive it within 365 days. The only thing you have to do in return is "pay it forward" by making a similar agreement on your LJ. You are not required to send a gift back to me (unless I also manage to make it on your list).

I still owe a few of you big presents, so you'll probably get this one with the other thing if it applies.

I figured I should make a post on account of it being my birthday today. So, um, here it is.

There's not much to report. Plans for my post-school vacation are mutating and proceeding apace. School itself is both lingering and ending too soon, as I want to be out of it but have to finish an essay that is nowhere near being finished first. You porbably have no idea how long I've been sitting around with the end of school as the sole motivation in my mind. I really need this next year off.

Aside from that, things have been up and down recently. I get in a lot of fights over a lot of dumb things because I and/or many of the people around me are apparently kind of belligerent nowadays. I also can't seem to go to sleep before 5 or 6 AM anymore. I have no idea if these things are related or not.

I do have a project on the go that's showing early signs of movement, though, so that's something to look forward to.

I'm trying to have some sort of occurrence take place this week. I'm not expecting anything, really. I just like to use otherwise trivial milestones as excuses to see other people. If you didn't get invited on Facebook, you're invited by this entry. Respond here if you like it better (I rather do).

So, in lieu of real content, I want to tell you a bit about this demo I've been playing recently and how great it is. I intend to get the full version at some point soon.

It's called Immortal Defense.Collapse )

1. Put your playlist on random.
2. Post the first line from the first 45.
3. Get your friends to guess what song the line belongs to.

My media player skipped most of the songs and continually went back to same albums, so I fudged a bit to keep things from getting dullCollapse )

Many of you did this music meme. I don't much like most of these things anymore, but this one is fun and I needed something to spark off the previous entry. I left out or edited one or two that had their titles in the first lines. There's one in there where I left in the title because it wasn't the exact formulation. You get bonus points if you get the nonintuitive subtitle.

Please note that you can guess multiple times and also that you can go for songs that have already been guessed, if you feel so moved.

It's been over a month, so I should probably jolt a bit of life into this semi-ambulatory carcass.

What has the year been like so far? It has been a year of decision, to be sure. It has been so decisive that it could easily be characterized as a guy yelling "action must be taken!" into random phones. I have watched movies and played video games; no staring deeply into painted walls, eh (save for the times where that is actually what I do).

Anyway. Real news! I've decided, after my fifth aimless and unsuccessful year at university, that it is high time to give the whole thing a break. This may not be news to most anyone who might be reading this, but I'm pretty sure I haven't told all of you yet. It was not an easy decision to make, and I am more aware than anyone of how people often don't come back from their breaks, but things have become untenable. The plan is to take a year off and see how things stand. By that time, I'll hopefull be slightly less indebted and significantly more refreshed from not having to spend all of my waking thoughts on the topic of how to care about Puritans long enough to write about them. It is probably not a good thing when one's studies cause one to occasionally recoil at the sight of books.

School matters and personal issues not really worthy of public account have combined to engender a frightful neglect of some of my friends, especially those who live at distances. You'll get your Christmas presents soon, hopefully. I think there's some free time looming hopefully on my personal horizon. Sorry if I've been an absentee personage. Communication difficulties are remora on the fatty flesh of friendship.

I haven't posted anything for a month or so, and I haven't posted anything of consequence for longer than that. This is what the exciting and fulfilling school year looks like, hoo boy.

Anyway, I'm posting not in order to actually say anything that is on my mind at all, but rather to tell you about this awesome free game that you should play if you have a computer to play it on.

Doukutsu Monogatari (Cave Story) is sort of like Mega Man and sort of like Metroid and a whole lot like itself and nothing else. It's an old-school platformer with style, heart, and complexity. I found it utterly captiviating, and beating it a half-hour ago was an immensely satisfying experience. Go to the link above for a fansite that has the game and a translation patch. I feel confident that you won't regret it.

I've been keeping myself distracted from things with a lot of other sweet games, too, but I want to try to beat them before recommending them.

Today was my last day of work. When I went out for dinner, this squirrel jumped onto the bunch where I was eating and approached me. It seemed insanely bold for a creature like that. I gave it some pizza.

OK, pay heed if you please. I'm having a party here (at the farm) some time over the coming week. Right now, Friday is looking like a good, firm date, but it can be changed if it allows more people to make it without unduly cutting anybody out. We have space here both indoors and outdoors. People can stay over. There is a dog and a cat, but their influence can be negated. Does anyone have any opinion on whether or not they can make it and when they can? Does anyone want to bring anyone? Use this post as a space for discussion.

You know who bears the responsibility for the ills of society? The answer is right here.

Somebody thought this up, somebody decided to run it, some people went through with it, and some people apparently watched it closely enough to be inspired to make response. I think that may be the funniest part of this.
